Small Group Point People: How’s Your Soul?

Our church just concluded our six-week fall sermon series and small group push. But the fall didn’t start with the start of the sermon series, it started back during the summer in getting everything ready. So it’s no wonder that on Monday, I felt a little more tired than usual.

Thankfully I was scheduled to meet with my spiritual director that day, and he began with the question, “How’s your soul?” Our time together allowed me the space to pray and listen to Jesus and my own soul of how I am truly doing.

Soul care, self-care, avoiding burnout…these are all topics we at this blog write about quite a bit because we recognize the huge need for it in our own lives, and we care about you as a person more than we care about how your ministry is doing.

The hard part about self-care is stopping midseason and giving yourself a check-up. Because I don’t know about you, but there are times when I think I have a “free” day, a day in which I think I will have time to do some personal reading, slow down a little and do that check-up, only to be inundated with more requests than I have time to accomplish.

So, I ask you today, “How’s your soul?” and “What are you intentionally doing in the middle of the season to care for your soul?”

May these words from Isaiah 43 encourage you:

But now, this is what the Lord say—he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba I your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth—everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
