A trend in recruiting group leaders you do not want to miss!
By: Gina Abbas
If you’ve been on social media lately there is a recruiting trend Small Group point people are going crazy about! It’s a Group in a Box. It’s basically a snazzy box filled with everything you need to launch a small group. It’s an easy entry point for anyone to get started leading a group. Fill out a card. Grab a box. Go start your group.
Check out the most popular items found in a Group in A Box:
A Box
It starts with A BOX! A popular place to get one custom-made is https://packlane.com/
One idea from a Small Group Point person at The Church at Severn Run is to use custom stickers to brand your box. They use http://www.sticker-ninja.com/ Photos: Courtesy of Lorie Hartshorn, C4 Church in Ajax Ontario and Jeff Buchanan, Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, North Carolina.
Conversation starter cards. Print them on business cards with rounded edges for a snazzy look. These are ROGO cards from Sandals Church in Riverside, Ca. ROGO is an abbreviation for being real with ourselves God and others. The language used at Sandals Church is “Grab a box, grab some friends and start a group. Sidenote: From what I’ve found online, Adam Workman is the catalyst for the widespread use of Group in a Box as a recruiting tool.

T-Shirt
Who doesn’t want a snazzy free T-Shirt to advertise groups? The Church at Severn Run in MD puts a Connect Group Tee in their Group in a Box. You totally want one now, don’t you? Photo: Courtesy of Amber Adams.
Hit the Like button on this one. Group leaders at Severn Run Church sport this kuh-nekt [because spelling phonetically is obviously more fun] button on Sundays to promote groups. Photo: Courtesy of Amber Adams.

Jeff Buchanan at Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, North Carolina equips his group leaders with some great books. What are your favorite books to give new group leaders?

Small groups who eat together…[you know where this is going].
For leaders with a great sense of humor, some SG point people include toilet paper and Poo-Pourri [spray before you go and know one will ever know!]. One SG point person includes a small roll of TP for an ice breaker game. Everyone takes some TP without knowing what it’s for. The more they take, the more get-to-know-you questions they have to answer. Oh snap. I almost took half the roll.
Like baby, baby, baby oh
A handy dandy child care guide filled with ideas for handling child care. Bonus stars if you can include a list of babysitter phone numbers.
Think outside of the Box
if you are in a state like CA where you have to pay for plastic bags in stores, it’s all about the
canvas bags. Photo: Courtesy of Carolyn Oh Taketa, Calvary Community Church, Southern California.
