The story begins in Exodus 17 where people are grumbling…and blaming Moses- “Why did you take us out here? Isn’t this journey ever going to end? Why can’t we find water? Didn’t you say God would provide?” Then, God tells him to go stand in the Nile river and strike the rock so water may come out. Then, he held up the same staff and as long as he held it up, the Israelites were winning. When he lowered his hands, the Israelites were losing. Can you imagine this? That’s a lot of pressure!
It also says, “When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up- one on one side, one on the other- so that his hands remained steady until sunset” (v.12).
This tells me Moses was tired. We all get tired from time to time. Maybe his heart was strong, his flesh weak. I wonder if Moses willed himself to be obedient and yet, he realized, he couldn’t do what God was asking him to do unless he had help. He had to be interdependent.
Have you ever asked someone you trusted to help you get through a particular season? Had you ever borrowed someone else’s faith?
Leadership is best done in community. Leadership is better together.
We all need someone to help hold us up- remind us of why we do what we do. We all have a time where we need to borrow someone else’s faith just like Moses did.

Some say leadership is lonely at the top- but I wonder if the best kind of leadership- leadership that is obediently living out what God has asked of us and helping pave the way for others to hear about the life God has called us to live- if the best leadership is done in community.
Because you can’t have accountability without community. No one should walk this journey of faith alone.
The best leadership lesson we can learn from this is who we are leading “with.” Who are you leading “with?” Who is holding up your hands? Who amidst the grumbling and frustration will “hold up your hands- one on one side, one on the other- so that your hands remain stead” (v.12).
As Small Group Point People, it is our job to be in community, and it’s our job to seek accountability.
Put a buddy system in place. Ask a friend to hold you accountable. Someone who can call you out. Someone who can hold up your hands when you need it the most. Yes, obedience is about a relationship with you and God, but it is also communal. There is power in being obedient together as a community.
Are you trying to lead from a place of obedience all on your own? Or, are you and your Small Group Point People obeying God together?
