The month of March is well-known for basketball and “March Madness.” There is often a buzz in the air with each game, chatter about big upsets, and anticipation of the “Final Four.” Why not take advantage of the energy and excitement, and bring it to your Small Group Ministry with various purposes in mind? Below are 5 purposeful ideas to incorporate some “March Madness” into your Small Group ministry during the month of March:
1. Offer short-term 5-week “March Madness”Small Groups for anyone not yet connected in a group. This is a great way to get unconnected people a taste of what Small Group life is all about. Chances are, they’ll enjoy it – and the group will continue long after “March Madness” ends. You’ll need to find leaders who are willing to lead these “March Madness” groups (a 5-week commitment), promote, and have a kick off on Sunday, March 1st. Be sure to capture stories of transformation and impact during these 5-weeks, and celebrate together at the end!
2. Host a March Madness Party. This serves as a fellowship opportunity, but can also be used as an outreach and service project. Each group member can invite a friend or two! Make it fun, make connections, share a little bit about your Small Group and when you will be meeting next — and invite your visitors back! There are various ways as to how you can use this as a service project also. Some ideas include: asking everyone to bring a pantry item for the local food bank; or to bring one item for a gift basket to be donated to someone in need of a little encouragement; or maybe even stick with the sports-theme, and collect sports toys or equipment and donate to a local shelter / youth club.
3. Since it’s March “Madness” decide to “mix things up” with your Small Group. Create a NEW schedule for your group this month, where everyone signs up to facilitate (or host) just ONE week. This will allow others to get comfortable in helping with various tasks, and is a great way to help train and raise up future leaders. In addition, if you host the group in a different location, it’s also a great opportunity to invite others in that area to come and see what the group is all about! Last, but not least, it offers the leader a much needed break.
4. Hold a “March Madness” basketball competition among your various Small Groups! This is a great way to encourage fun and fellowship among groups. This works well if your Church has a gym space – but if not, you can always choose to meet at a local park or gym that offers space.
5. Just behind March is Easter Sunday. A big part of March Madness is the “Final Four.” Challenge your small group members to pray and invite “FOUR” people to Church for Easter. Spend the month praying for these specific people: Friend, Occupational Co-worker, Unchurched aquaintance/neighbor, and a Relative. See what God will do!
Whether you like basketball – or not, “March Madness” has something to offer anyone, and can surely be used to create some excitement in your Small Group Ministry!
